International students studying in the USA on an F-1 student visa may have limited opportunities to work while studying, but their primary purpose must remain full-time study. Work rights depend on the type of employment and the student’s immigration status.

1. On-campus employment: An eligible F-1 student can generally work up to 20 hours per week while school is in session. During official school breaks or periods when school is not in session, eligible students may generally work full-time.
2. Off-campus employment: Students cannot simply take a regular off-campus job. Certain off-campus employment options require specific authorisation, such as employment based on severe economic hardship, CPT (Curricular Practical Training) or OPT (Optional Practical Training), depending on the student’s circumstances.
3. CPT/OPT: These programmes can allow students to gain practical work experience related to their field of study, subject to specific eligibility and authorisation requirements.
4. Working beyond the permitted limit: Working more hours than authorised or undertaking unauthorised employment can be a violation of F-1 status and can have serious immigration consequences.
